The SOF National Science Olympiad (NSO) evaluates a student's scientific temperament. Earning a medal requires going beyond textbook definitions and understanding the practical applications of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Step 1: Divide and Conquer the Syllabus
The NSO paper contains three sections: Logical Reasoning, Science, and the Achievers Section. Start your preparation by clearly segregating your school syllabus into conceptual clusters—for example, categorize 'Light' and 'Motion' together as Physics, and 'Cells' and 'Nutrition' as Biology.
Step 2: Do Not Neglect Logical Reasoning
Just like the Math Olympiad, the Science Olympiad dedicates a significant portion of its marks to Logical Reasoning. Being able to solve spatial, analytical, and directional puzzles quickly will give you a massive lead over competitors who only focus on pure science.
Step 3: Experiment-Based Questions
NSO papers, especially the Achievers Section, frequently use diagrams of experiments (e.g., separating funnels, circuit diagrams). Ensure you understand the underlying principle of every experiment listed in your NCERT/ICSE textbook.
Step 4: Take Regular CBT Mock Tests
Reading theory is not enough. You must practice objective-type, multiple-choice questions in a time-bound environment. Computer Based Tests (CBT) train your mind to retrieve information rapidly without panicking.
